Whether the header shows suggestions as the visitor types.
What it controls
Enable predictive search shows product suggestions with images in a panel under the search field while the visitor types, in the header on desktop and in the menu drawer on mobile. Pressing Enter always goes to the full search page, with or without suggestions.
What the search page shows when nothing is found is set on the search page itself: the Recommended collection setting of the Search section on the search template.
How it connects
The header’s search field and the Predictive search section render the suggestions. The Search section on the search template shows results, filters and the recommended collection. Product cards in both places follow the Product cards settings.
Setting it up
- Leave Enable predictive search on unless your products have very similar names and the suggestions confuse more than they help.
- Open the search template and pick a Recommended collection on the Search section.

Tips
- Predictive search is fetched only when a visitor starts typing, so it costs nothing on page load.
- The recommended collection for empty results lives on the Search section of the search template, next to the filters, because it is part of that page.
- Search results cover products, blog posts and pages. Filtering on the results page is available for products only, because Shopify only indexes products for filters.
